IV Sedation

IV Sedation

Did you know that dental anxiety causes around 22% of people to skip their dental appointments? Fortunately, we offer many forms of sedation to help our patients find peace of mind when visiting our office. IV sedation can help ease your worries so you can get through your necessary dental procedures from our new dentist in San Antonio at La Cantera Dental Group.

What is IV Sedation?

Intravenous (IV) sedation involves getting sedation medication into your vein through a needle in your hand. This produces a lowered level of consciousness that puts you in a twilight state during your dental treatment. Patients getting IV sedation will be semi-conscious and can respond to requests, but they’ll have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.

Healthy patients with moderate to severe anxiety may greatly benefit from IV sedation.

What Are the Benefits?

One of the greatest things about this form of sedation dentistry is that dentists can ensure your comfort by customizing the dose. Those with cognitive or physical disabilities may also benefit from IV sedation. Below are some of the other advantages:

  • Easier to administer precise amounts
  • Highly safe
  • Fewer risks of blood clots or pulmonary emboli
  • No memory of the procedure

Recovering from IV Sedation

You might feel drowsy for a few hours after your procedure, so make sure to have a responsible adult accompany you to your appointment. This person may also need to collect post-op instructions from your dentist to give you once you’re back in a clear state of mind. Avoid strenuous activity, alcohol, and unapproved medications for the next 24 hours.
